Decorative Art for Home, Office and Garden
| Metal wall art is a work of art intended to be displayed on the walls of homes, offices and gardens as a means of decorating. Various materials are used, but the common thread is that they incorporate at least some metal. Usually metal wall art is three-dimensional and free form, whereas other types of wall art are two-dimensional and are usually framed. In the early 20th century an exciting new type of wall art, metal wall art, began to gain attention. Sculpted from readily available industrial metals, such as iron, steel, copper and brass, metal wall art introduced a new, free flowing dimensionality that distinguished it from framed works of art. It gained popularity during the Art Deco period during the 1920's and 1930's. Through the 1940's and 1950's it entered an abstract period that engendered geometric designs that some considered to be modern or futuristic. An example of that style is the Sunburst from Bovano of Cheshire shown below. Throughout the last half of the 20th century, metal wall art gained market acceptance and is now widely available, covering just about any imaginable theme. Perhaps because of it's relative newness, various terms are used to describe metal wall art, ranging from "wall sculptures", "metal wall sculptures", and "metal wall hangings", to "metal wall decor". Throughout this web site we use these terms interchangeably. Regardless of how one has come to refer to it, metal wall art is an intriguing and beautiful art form. |
